Common Percentage Mistakes in Exams

Percentage mistakes usually happen because the question is set up incorrectly, not because the arithmetic is difficult. The most common errors involve the wrong base value, reverse comparisons, successive changes, and careless conversions between fractions, decimals, and percentages.

This guide is designed to help you recognise those traps before they cost marks in SSC, Banking, Railway, and other competitive-exam arithmetic.

Mistake 1: Using the Wrong Base Value

Percentage change is usually measured from the original value. If you use the final value as the denominator, the answer changes.

Suppose a price rises from 200 to 250.

Increase = 50.

Percentage increase = 50/200 × 100 = 25%.

If you divide by 250 instead, you get 20%, which answers a different comparison.

Mistake 2: Thinking Reverse Percentage Is Symmetric

If A is 25% more than B, it does not mean B is 25% less than A.

Let B = 100. Then A = 125.

Now compare B with A:

Difference = 25.

25/125 × 100 = 20%.

So A is 25% more than B, but B is 20% less than A.

Mistake 3: Cancelling Equal Increase and Decrease

A 20% increase followed by a 20% decrease does not normally produce zero change because the two percentages are applied to different values.

Start with 100.

  • Increase by 20% → 120
  • Decrease 20% of 120 → 24
  • Final value → 96

The net result is a 4% decrease.

Mistake 4: Adding Successive Percentage Changes Directly

If a value increases by 10% and then by 20%, the total increase is not simply 30%.

Start with 100:

  • After 10% increase → 110
  • 20% of 110 = 22
  • Final value → 132

The net increase is 32%.

Successive changes should be handled with actual values, multipliers, or the net-change formula.

Mistake 5: Confusing Part and Whole

In the formula:

Percentage = (Part / Whole) × 100

the denominator must be the correct whole.

If 45 students passed out of 60:

45/60 × 100 = 75%.

Reversing the fraction gives a completely different result.

Mistake 6: Confusing Percentage with Percentage Points

If a rate rises from 40% to 50%, the increase is 10 percentage points.

But the percentage increase relative to the original 40% is:

10/40 × 100 = 25%.

These two statements describe different things, so read the wording carefully.

Mistake 7: Treating Approximate Fractions as Exact

Values such as 33.33% and 66.67% are often used as practical approximations for one-third and two-thirds.

But one-third is actually a repeating decimal:

33.3333...%

If the question requires an exact result, do not round too early.

Mistake 8: Moving the Decimal Incorrectly

To convert a percentage into a decimal, divide by 100.

  • 25% = 0.25
  • 5% = 0.05
  • 0.5% = 0.005

A common mistake is writing 5% as 0.5 or 0.5% as 0.05.

Slow down when the percentage is below 1%.

Mistake 9: Reading “Of” and “More Than” as the Same Thing

These statements are different:

  • 20% of 500
  • A is 20% more than B

The first is a direct percentage calculation. The second describes a relationship between two values.

Do not apply a direct “x% of y” shortcut automatically to comparison questions.

Mistake 10: Forgetting the Original Value in Word Problems

In word problems, the original value may be hidden inside the sentence. Before calculating, ask:

  • What value existed first?
  • What value changed?
  • What is the percentage based on?
  • Is the question asking for the original value or the final value?

Writing these relationships down can prevent many avoidable errors.

Mistake 11: Using a Shortcut Without Understanding It

A shortcut is useful only when you know why it works and when it applies. Memorising a trick without understanding the base or relationship can make a simple question harder.

If you are unsure, return to the standard formula. A reliable method is better than a fast method you cannot explain.

Mistake 12: Rounding Too Early

Early rounding can create a noticeable error in multi-step calculations. Keep enough precision until the final step unless the question clearly allows an approximation.

This is especially important in data interpretation, successive percentage changes, and repeated calculations.

Mistake 13: Chasing Speed Before Accuracy

Mental calculation is useful only if the setup is correct. Students sometimes rush because the numbers look easy and then miss the base value, a negative change, or a comparison word.

During practice, build accuracy first. Add time pressure only after the method is stable.

Worked Error Examples

The examples below show how a small setup mistake changes the answer.

Example 1: Wrong Denominator

A value rises from 80 to 100.

Wrong approach: 20/100 × 100 = 20%.

Correct approach: 20/80 × 100 = 25% increase.

Example 2: Equal Increase and Decrease

A value increases by 30% and then decreases by 30%.

Start with 100:

100 → 130 → 91.

Net result = 9% decrease.

Example 3: Percentage Points

A success rate rises from 60% to 72%.

Increase in percentage points = 12 points.

Relative percentage increase = 12/60 × 100 = 20%.

Quick Error-Check Routine

Before finalising a percentage answer, ask yourself:

  1. What is the base value?
  2. Am I comparing the correct two values?
  3. Is this a direct percentage or a percentage change?
  4. Are there successive changes?
  5. Did I reverse the comparison?
  6. Did I round too early?
  7. Does the final answer make sense?

Practice Prompts

  1. Explain why a 20% decrease followed by a 20% increase is not zero change.
  2. A value rises from 120 to 150. Find the percentage increase.
  3. A is 40% more than B. Find how much percent B is less than A.
  4. A rate rises from 50% to 60%. Find the increase in percentage points and the relative percentage increase.
  5. A number falls by 10% and then rises by 10%. Find the net effect.

How to Learn from Percentage Mistakes

Do not only mark an answer wrong. Record the reason:

  • wrong base;
  • wrong formula;
  • comparison error;
  • decimal conversion;
  • successive-change error;
  • careless arithmetic;
  • rushed reading.

If the same mistake appears more than once, revise that pattern separately before doing another mixed set.
