Percentage shortcuts can save time when a calculation looks awkward but can be broken into easier parts. The most useful shortcuts are not special formulas. They are simple ways of rearranging a calculation so that you can work with familiar values such as 10%, 5%, 1%, 20%, or 50%.
This approach is especially useful in objective arithmetic, where a few saved seconds on each calculation can make a difference. The aim, however, is not to calculate mentally at any cost. Use a shortcut only when it is clear, accurate, and easier than the standard method.
Build Percentages from Easy Parts
A percentage that looks inconvenient can often be split into smaller percentages that are easy to calculate.
For example:
18% = 10% + 5% + 2% + 1%
Find 18% of 250:
- 10% of 250 = 25
- 5% of 250 = 12.5
- 2% of 250 = 5
- 1% of 250 = 2.5
Add the parts:
25 + 12.5 + 5 + 2.5 = 45.
Choose the Shortest Split
There is usually more than one way to split a percentage. Do not automatically use the longest breakdown.
For 18% of 450, you could use 10% + 5% + 2% + 1%. But another option is:
18% = 20% - 2%
- 20% of 450 = 90
- 2% of 450 = 9
Therefore:
18% of 450 = 90 - 9 = 81.
The second method needs fewer steps, so it is usually the better shortcut.
Use a Nearby Easy Percentage
When a percentage is close to a very easy value, calculate the easy value first and adjust.
For example:
49% = 50% - 1%
Find 49% of 600:
- 50% of 600 = 300
- 1% of 600 = 6
So 49% of 600 = 294.
The same idea works well with values such as 19%, 21%, 29%, 31%, 39%, 41%, 48%, 51%, 98%, and 99%.
Use 1% as a Flexible Building Block
One percent is one-hundredth of a number. Once you know 1%, you can quickly build several nearby percentages.
For 700:
- 1% = 7
- 2% = 14
- 3% = 21
- 4% = 28
- 6% = 42
This is useful when the required percentage contains a small remainder after you calculate a larger easy part.
Use 5% by Halving 10%
Instead of multiplying by 5 and dividing by 100, first calculate 10% and halve it.
For example, find 5% of 860:
10% of 860 = 86.
Half of 86 = 43.
This also makes percentages such as 15%, 25%, 35%, and 45% easier to split when another method is not immediately obvious.
Use 20% by Dividing by Five
Because 20% = 1/5, some calculations become much shorter if you divide the number by five.
20% of 650 = 650 ÷ 5 = 130.
You can then adjust around 20%. For example:
19% of 650 = 20% of 650 - 1% of 650.
130 - 6.5 = 123.5.
Use 50% as an Anchor
Half of a number is usually easy to calculate, so 50% is a useful anchor for percentages close to it.
Find 48% of 350:
- 50% of 350 = 175
- 2% of 350 = 7
48% of 350 = 175 - 7 = 168.
Use 100% for High Percentages
For percentages close to 100%, calculate the missing percentage instead of building the required percentage from smaller pieces.
Find 97% of 800:
- 100% of 800 = 800
- 3% of 800 = 24
Therefore:
97% of 800 = 800 - 24 = 776.
Simplify Before Multiplying
When you use the standard percentage calculation, simplify the fraction before doing a large multiplication.
For example:
24% of 375 = 24/100 × 375.
Since 375/100 = 15/4:
24 × 15/4 = 6 × 15 = 90.
Cancelling convenient factors first can make written calculations much faster.
Use Multipliers for Increase and Decrease
For percentage change questions, a multiplier can be shorter than calculating the change separately.
A 20% increase means the new value is 120% of the original:
New value = Original × 1.20
A 20% decrease means:
New value = Original × 0.80
For example, after a 15% increase, 400 becomes:
400 × 1.15 = 460.
Use multipliers carefully when several changes occur because each new percentage acts on the updated value.
Do Not Cancel Equal Percentage Changes
A shortcut should never replace the underlying percentage logic.
Suppose a value increases by 20% and then decreases by 20%.
Starting from 100:
- 100 × 1.20 = 120
- 120 × 0.80 = 96
The final value is 96, so the net result is a 4% decrease, not zero.
Worked Shortcut Examples
The examples below show how to choose a convenient calculation route before starting the arithmetic.
Example 1: Find 14% of 350
Use 10% + 4%.
- 10% of 350 = 35
- 4% of 350 = 14
Answer = 49.
Example 2: Find 29% of 600
Use 30% - 1%.
- 30% of 600 = 180
- 1% of 600 = 6
Answer = 174.
Example 3: Find 52% of 450
Use 50% + 2%.
- 50% of 450 = 225
- 2% of 450 = 9
Answer = 234.
Example 4: Find 98% of 750
Use 100% - 2%.
- 100% of 750 = 750
- 2% of 750 = 15
Answer = 735.
When Not to Use a Shortcut
Use the standard method when the shortcut creates more work or increases the chance of an error.
Avoid forcing a shortcut when:
- the standard calculation is already simple;
- you are unsure which value is the base;
- the question contains several successive changes;
- the numbers require awkward decimal adjustments;
- you cannot explain why the shortcut works.
Accuracy should always come before speed.

Build Speed Without Collecting Too Many Tricks
Practise choosing between only a few reliable methods: splitting, nearby-value adjustment, fraction simplification, and multipliers. With repetition, you will start recognising the shortest route without consciously testing several methods.
If a shortcut repeatedly causes mistakes, stop using it until the underlying percentage idea is clear.
