Profit and Loss यानी लाभ-हानि तब आसान लगता है जब basic quantities साफ हों। Discount, Marked Price, successive changes या shortcuts सीखने से पहले Cost Price (CP), Selling Price (SP), profit, loss और सही percentage base पहचानना जरूरी है।

यह lesson SSC, Banking और Railway arithmetic के लिए foundation तैयार करता है। लक्ष्य बहुत सारे tricks याद करना नहीं है। पहले यह समझें कि हर value क्या बताती है, profit% और loss% में CP base क्यों होता है, और direct तथा simple reverse questions कैसे solve किए जाते हैं।

1. Cost Price (CP) क्या होता है?

Cost Price वह कीमत है जिस पर कोई वस्तु खरीदी जाती है। Basic profit-loss questions में CP सामान्यतः शुरुआती value और percentage calculation का base होता है।

अगर दुकानदार ने bag ₹800 में खरीदा, तो CP = ₹800। Word problems में कभी-कभी transport या अन्य expenses भी cost में जुड़ सकते हैं, लेकिन केवल तब जब question ऐसा स्पष्ट रूप से कहे।

2. Selling Price (SP) क्या होता है?

Selling Price वह कीमत है जिस पर वस्तु बेची जाती है।

  • SP > CP हो तो profit होता है।
  • SP < CP हो तो loss होता है।
  • SP = CP हो तो न profit होता है और न loss।

Example: CP = ₹500 और SP = ₹650। SP, CP से ₹150 अधिक है, इसलिए profit = ₹150।

3. Profit और Loss Amount कैसे निकालें?

  • Profit = SP − CP
  • Loss = CP − SP

SP, CP से कम हो तो profit formula नहीं लगाएँ। पहले CP और SP compare करें, फिर तय करें कि difference profit है या loss।

4. Profit% और Loss% में CP Base क्यों होता है?

Profit या loss यह बताता है कि original investment के मुकाबले कितना gain या loss हुआ। Original investment CP है, इसलिए सामान्य questions में percentage CP पर निकलता है।

  • Profit% = Profit ÷ CP × 100
  • Loss% = Loss ÷ CP × 100

Example: CP = ₹400 और SP = ₹500। Profit = ₹100। इसलिए Profit% = 100 ÷ 400 × 100 = 25%

Beginner level पर common mistake यह है कि student denominator में SP रख देता है। Standard profit-loss question में CP ही base रहेगा, जब तक wording कोई दूसरा reference value न बताए।

5. Direct Question: Profit होने पर SP निकालें

CP = ₹600 और profit = 20% हो तो profit amount = 600 का 20% = ₹120। इसलिए SP = 600 + 120 = ₹720

Multiplier method से यही calculation 600 × 1.20 = ₹720 है। Basics में पहले addition logic समझें; बाद में speed के लिए multiplier useful होगा।

6. Direct Question: Loss होने पर SP निकालें

CP = ₹800 और loss = 15% हो तो loss amount = 800 का 15% = ₹120। इसलिए SP = 800 − 120 = ₹680

Multiplier form: SP = 800 × 0.85 = ₹680।

7. Reverse Basic: SP से CP निकालें

Reverse questions में ज्यादा ध्यान चाहिए क्योंकि final SP में profit या loss पहले से शामिल होता है।

अगर कोई item ₹720 में 20% profit पर बेचा गया, तो ₹720, CP का 120% है। इसलिए:

CP = 720 × 100 ÷ 120 = ₹600।

₹720 का सीधे 20% घटाना गलत होगा क्योंकि 20% profit CP पर calculate हुआ था, SP पर नहीं।

8. Marked Price और Cost Price अलग हैं

Marked Price (MP) वह displayed या listed price है जिस पर discount दिया जा सकता है। MP को automatically CP या SP न मानें।

Discount, MP को SP से जोड़ता है; profit या loss, CP को SP से जोड़ता है। यही difference आगे Discount and Marked Price Questions में बहुत important होगा।

9. Beginners की Common Mistakes

  • Wrong difference: Profit = SP − CP और Loss = CP − SP।
  • Wrong denominator: सामान्य profit% और loss% में CP base होता है।
  • Discount को loss समझना: discount MP पर और loss CP पर आधारित होता है।
  • Reverse percentage को सीधे घटाना: 20% profit को SP का 20% घटाकर reverse नहीं कर सकते।
  • Values identify किए बिना calculation शुरू करना: पहले CP, SP और पूछा गया quantity लिखें।

10. Solved Examples

Example 1: CP = ₹720 और SP = ₹675। Loss = 720 − 675 = ₹45। Loss% = 45 ÷ 720 × 100 = 6.25%

Example 2: CP = ₹840 और SP = ₹910। Profit = 910 − 840 = ₹70। Profit% = 70 ÷ 840 × 100 = 8⅓%

Example 3: CP = ₹1,200 और profit = 10%। SP = 1,200 × 1.10 = ₹1,320

11. Quick Practice Check

  1. CP = ₹500 और SP = ₹575। Profit और profit% निकालिए।
  2. CP = ₹900 और SP = ₹810। Loss और loss% निकालिए।
  3. CP = ₹640 और profit = 25%। SP निकालिए।
  4. SP = ₹540 और loss = 10%। CP निकालिए।
  5. Normal profit% और loss% में सही base क्या है?

Answers: (1) ₹75 और 15%; (2) ₹90 और 10%; (3) ₹800; (4) ₹600; (5) CP।
