Profit and Loss के word problems तब आसान होते हैं जब calculation शुरू करने से पहले language को CP, SP, MP, profit, loss और discount में translate किया जाए। Arithmetic अक्सर आसान होता है; असली challenge यह पहचानना है कि sentence किस value की बात कर रहा है और percentage किस base पर लग रहा है।
यह guide SSC, Banking और Railway exams में आने वाली common language patterns पर focused है। Method है: words को symbols में बदलें, base पहचानें, relation लिखें और फिर calculation करें।
1. Words को Symbols में बदलने का Method
- Bought for / purchased for / cost him → CP
- Sold for / sells at → SP
- Marked at / list price → MP
- Gains / earns profit → SP, CP से ऊपर
- Loses / loss → SP, CP से नीचे
- Discount → सामान्यतः MP पर percentage
यही translation step अधिकांश mistakes रोकता है।
2. Direct Buying और Selling Language
Example: एक trader कोई article ₹400 में खरीदता है और ₹460 में बेचता है।
CP = ₹400, SP = ₹460, profit = ₹60.
Profit% = 60 ÷ 400 × 100 = 15%।
3. Loss वाली Language
Example: एक item का CP ₹800 है और उसे 15% loss पर बेचा जाता है।
SP = 800 × 85/100 = ₹680।
15% loss का अर्थ SP, CP का 85% है।
4. Marked Price और Discount वाली Language
Example: एक watch का MP ₹900 है और 10% discount दिया जाता है।
SP = 900 × 90/100 = ₹810।
अगर CP = ₹720 है, तो profit = ₹90 और profit% = 12.5%।

5. “Discount देने के बाद भी Profit” Pattern
Example: MP = ₹1,500, discount = 20% और फिर भी profit = 20%.
SP = 1,500 × 80/100 = ₹1,200.
₹1,200, CP का 120% है।
CP = 1,200 × 100/120 = ₹1,000।
6. Reverse Profit Wording
Example: कोई article ₹720 में 20% profit पर बेचा गया।
₹720, CP का 120% है।
CP = 720 × 100/120 = ₹600।
7. Reverse Loss Wording
Example: कोई article ₹680 में 15% loss पर बेचा गया।
SP, CP का 85% है।
CP = 680 × 100/85 = ₹800।
8. “More Than” और “Less Than” का Base Trap
अगर A, B से 25% अधिक है, तो B = 100 और A = 125 लें।
अब B, A से 25/125 × 100 = 20% कम है।
Reverse percentage बदल जाती है क्योंकि base बदल गया।
9. Markup के बाद Discount
Example: MP, CP से 25% ऊपर है और फिर 10% discount दिया गया।
CP = 100 मानें। MP = 125.
SP = 125 × 0.90 = 112.5.
Profit = 12.5%।
10. Target Profit और Discount
Example: CP = ₹800। 20% discount देने के बाद 20% profit चाहिए। Required MP निकालिए।
Required SP = 800 × 1.20 = ₹960.
₹960, MP का 80% है।
MP = 960 × 100/80 = ₹1,200।
11. Same Selling Price पर Profit और Loss
दो articles दोनों ₹1,200 में बेचे गए। पहले पर 20% profit और दूसरे पर 20% loss है।
पहले का CP = 1,200 × 100/120 = ₹1,000.
दूसरे का CP = 1,200 × 100/80 = ₹1,500.
Total CP = ₹2,500 और total SP = ₹2,400.
Net loss = ₹100, इसलिए loss% = 4%।
12. Quantity और Unit वाली Language
कुछ questions में “per item”, “per kg”, “dozen”, “total quantity” या “effective cost” जैसे words होते हैं।
Calculation से पहले check करें कि value एक unit की है या पूरे transaction की।
13. Short-Weight या Effective Quantity Pattern
कुछ questions में seller full unit का पैसा लेता है लेकिन quantity कम देता है। इससे effective cost बदलती है।
Example: 1 kg का charge लेकर 900 g देना मतलब customer को केवल 90% quantity मिल रही है।
ऐसे questions में profit निकालने से पहले effective quantity relation बनाना जरूरी है।
14. Four-Step Translation Framework
- Identify: CP, SP, MP, discount, profit/loss words mark करें।
- Base चुनें: profit/loss में CP, discount में MP।
- Relation लिखें: multiplier, ratio या formula बनाएं।
- Calculate और check करें: answer की direction logical है या नहीं।

- MP और CP mix करना: discount और profit अलग bases पर हो सकते हैं।

- Same percentage को same amount मानना: amount base पर depend करता है।

Example 1: CP = ₹640 और SP = ₹800। Profit = ₹160, इसलिए profit% = 25%।
Example 2: MP = ₹2,000 और discount = 15%। SP = ₹1,700।
Example 3: 10% discount के बाद SP = ₹1,080। MP = ₹1,200।
Example 4: SP = ₹540 at 10% loss। CP = ₹600।
